envyings, drunkenness, revellings, and such like (Gal. 5:19ff). This Pauline insistence on sanctity, moreover, has the unqualified support of the other apostles. They warn against a dead faith (James 2:14), the unbridled tongue (James 1:26), neglect of the poor (James 2), and hatred (1 John 3:15). And these warnings go hand in hand with the admonition to love one another, not only in word, neither with the tongue, but in deed and truth (1 John 3:18), and to practice self-purification (1 John 3:3).
